What learners see and do during an AI Simulation

Written by Jon Low

This article explains what learners see and do during an AI Simulation - from finding it in their Learner Home through to reviewing their session summary. It is written for Administrators who want to understand the learner experience, and can be shared with learners directly.

Finding your simulation

Assigned simulations appear in your Learner Home under Assignments. Each simulation tile shows the title, due date, estimated duration, and a short description of the scenario.

Assignments are grouped into tabs: In Progress, Overdue, Completed, and Archived, so you can quickly see what needs your attention.

πŸ’‘ Tip

If you have been told you have a simulation to complete but cannot see it, check the 'Overdue' tab - it may have passed its due date.

Before you start

Select a simulation to open the pre-session briefing. Before starting, take a moment to review the four tabs:

  • Overview - A summary of what the session is about, how long it runs, how many goals you will be assessed on, and the scoring type (Goal-Based or Score-Based).

  • Pre-Meeting Brief - Your role in the scenario, what is happening, and what you know going into the conversation. Read this carefully - it sets up the context you need.

  • Character - The background and personality of the person you will be speaking to. Understanding who they are helps you approach the conversation more effectively.

  • Session Goals - The specific goals the AI will assess you on during the session, with progress indicators showing how you are tracking against each one.

When you are ready, select 'Start session'.

πŸ“Œ Note

You can return to the brief at any point during the session by selecting 'View Brief' in the top right corner of the screen.

During the session

The simulation opens into a live conversation with the AI character. The character will speak first and respond to everything you say in real time.

Goals panel

The Goals panel on the right-hand side shows each session goal and updates live as you progress. Goals marked 'MET' have been achieved. Use this to track how you are performing as the conversation develops.

Toolbar

Along the bottom of the screen, the toolbar gives you access to the following controls:

  • Mute - mute or unmute your microphone.

  • Subtitles - toggle subtitles on or off. When on, the character's speech appears as text at the bottom of the screen.

  • Screen share - share your screen with the character during the session.

  • Emoji reactions - send a reaction during the conversation.

  • Record - toggle session recording on or off.

  • Show transcription - view a live transcript of the conversation.

  • Settings - adjust audio and video settings.

  • 'Leave' - exit the session early. You will be prompted to confirm before leaving.

πŸ’‘ Tip

If the character's voice is unclear, turn on subtitles using the toolbar. Their responses will appear as text at the bottom of the screen.

Ending the session

When the conversation reaches a natural conclusion, a dialog box will appear asking if you want to end the session. Select 'End Session' to proceed to your summary, or 'Continue Conversation' to keep going.

You can also end the session at any time by selecting 'Leave' from the toolbar.

Your session summary

At the end of each session you receive a Session Summary. This shows how you performed and what to focus on next.

  • Overall score and status - Your percentage score and whether you Passed or Failed overall.

  • Things Remembered About You - If session memory is enabled, this shows what the character has noted about you from this and previous sessions.

  • Conversation Summary - A short recap of how the conversation went, written by the AI.

Scroll down to see your performance against each goal, your top strengths, and specific areas to work on.

Actions from the session summary

At the bottom of the summary, four actions are available:

  • 'Download Summary' - Save a copy of your session summary to your device.

  • 'Email Summary' - Send your session summary by email - for example, to share it with your manager.

  • 'Provide Feedback' - Rate the simulation and leave feedback for your Administrator.

  • 'Contest Score' - If you feel your score does not accurately reflect your performance, raise a contest for your Administrator to review.

πŸ“Œ Note

Contesting a score does not automatically change it. Your Administrator will review the contest and follow up with you directly.

When you are done, select 'Return to Lobby' to go back to your Learner Home.

FAQs

Can I redo a simulation?

Yes, if your Administrator has allowed multiple attempts. Return to the simulation from your Learner Home and select 'Start session' to begin a new session. Each attempt is recorded separately in Reporting.

Can my manager see my results?

Yes. Your Administrator and Manager can see your score, status, and progress. Your full session summary is also visible to your Administrator. You can also choose to email your summary directly to your manager from the session summary screen.

What if the microphone is not working?

Check that your browser has permission to access your microphone. If the issue persists, try refreshing the page or switching to a different browser. You can also switch to chat mode if audio is unavailable - check with your Administrator whether this option is enabled for your simulation.

What does it mean if a goal is not marked as Met?

It means the AI did not detect that you demonstrated that behaviour during the session. Review the goal description in your session summary and look at the areas to work on - these will give you specific guidance on what to focus on next time.
