Connecting Learn:Up to Claude

Step by Step Guide for Claude Users

Written by Jon Low

The Learn:Up MCP Server lets you ask Claude questions about your learning data in natural language — for example, "Who is overdue on the data protection course this quarter?" Claude reads the answer from your live Learn:Up data. This article shows you how to connect the two.

How it works

Connecting happens in two stages:

  1. A Claude organisation Owner adds Learn:Up once, for the whole organisation. This makes Learn:Up available to your people. It doesn't connect anyone yet.

  2. Each person then connects their own account. Claude sends them to Learn:Up to sign in. The connection belongs to that person only.

Think of it like a shared printer: the IT team adds the printer once, then each person still logs in with their own badge to use it.

Because every connection belongs to one named person, Claude can only ever see what that person can already see in Learn:Up. A manager sees their team. An admin sees what their admin role allows. Connecting Claude doesn't widen anyone's access.

It is read-only. Claude can answer questions about your Learn:Up data, but it can't create, edit or delete content, assign training, or change due dates. Create, update and edit are planned for a later release.

Before you start

You need:

  • A Claude Team or Enterprise plan. On these plans an Owner can add Learn:Up once for everyone. Enterprise also lets you control which roles can use it.

  • Custom connectors allowed in your Claude organisation. Some companies turn these off. If you can't see the option, ask your Claude Owner.

  • An Active account in Learn:Up. Admin, Manager or learner. Academy admin access will come in later releases.

  • The Learn:Up MCP server URL: If you use a subdomain/custom-domain your URL will look something like this in the US https://<subdomain>.app.workramp.com/mcp or https://<customdomain>/mcp

and this is your in the EU https://<subdomain>.app.eu.workramp.com/mcp

Stage 1 — Your Claude Owner adds Learn:Up (once per organisation)

This is done once, by an Owner (or Primary Owner) of your Claude organisation.

  1. In Claude, go to Organization settings → Connectors.

  2. Select Add, hover over Custom, then select Web.

  3. Fill in the details:

    • Name: Learn:Up — use a name your people will recognise.

    • Remote MCP server URL: If you use a subdomain/custom-domain your URL will look something like this in the US https://<subdomain>.app.workramp.com/mcp or https://<customdomain>/mcp

and this is your in the EU https://<subdomain>.app.eu.workramp.com/mcp

    • Advanced settings: leave empty. You don't need an OAuth client ID or secret — Learn:Up handles this for you.

  4. Select Add.

Nobody is connected yet. Learn:Up is now available for your people to add.

Don't turn on "Managed authorization" for Learn:Up. Claude offers a setting that signs everyone in centrally. Learn:Up is designed so each person signs in as themselves, with their own permissions, so leave this off.

Stage 2 — Each person connects their own account (once per person)

  1. In Claude, go to Customize → Connectors

  2. Find Learn:Up in the list.

    • Can't see it? Restart Claude (quit the desktop app fully and reopen it, or refresh the browser).

  3. Select Connect. Claude sends you to Learn:Up.

  4. Sign in with your normal Learn:Up login or through your company's SSO.

  5. Read the consent screen. It shows what Claude will be allowed to read. Select Approve.

  6. You're sent back to Claude, connected.

Your Learn:Up password is never shared with Claude, and Claude never stores your Learn:Up credentials.

Once connected, Learn:Up works in Claude on the web, the desktop app and the mobile apps.

What you see depends on your Learn:Up role. An admin is offered the full set of tools. Other roles see fewer. That's expected — it's decided by your Learn:Up permissions, not by anything you set up in Claude.

Step 3 — Check it works

  1. Start a new chat.

  2. Select the + button at the bottom left of the message box, then Connectors, and make sure Learn:Up is switched on.

  3. Ask: "How many courses do we have?"

You should get a number back.

Tip: if Claude doesn't reach for Learn:Up, name it — "Using Learn:Up, how many courses do we have?" That usually settles it for the rest of the chat.

Some other questions to try:

  • "Who is still outstanding on fire safety since we launched it in March?"

  • "Which certifications expire in the next 30 days?"

  • "List the learning paths we have for new starters."

If it isn't working

Problem

What to try

Learn:Up doesn't appear after your Owner added it

Restart Claude — quit the app fully and reopen it

You can't add a custom connector at all

Check you're on Team or Enterprise, and that your organisation allows custom connectors

Claude ignores Learn:Up

Check Learn:Up is switched on under + → Connectors, and name it in your question

Sign-in fails

Check you're an Employee Learning administrator in Learn:Up

You have fewer tools than a colleague

Expected — the tools you see follow your Learn:Up role

A question returns nothing

see below

A question returns nothing

The date range catches people out. Questions about training that was rolled out a while ago need a date range that covers when it was assigned. For example:

  • ✅ "Who's still outstanding on fire safety since we launched it in March?"

  • ❌ "Who's outstanding on fire safety this month?" — this may return nothing, which can look like everyone has completed it.

Some questions it will decline. At the moment Claude can't answer:

  • Challenge results across the whole organisation (one person at a time only)

  • Certification history (only upcoming expiries)

  • Event attendance across the whole organisation (one session at a time only)

When Claude says it can't answer these, it's working correctly.

Still stuck? Contact Support and include the exact question you asked and the answer you got back — this helps us fix things much faster.

Disconnecting

To disconnect, go to Settings → Connectors, open Learn:Up and select Disconnect.

Owners can remove Learn:Up for everyone under Organization settings → Connectors.
